I was on my way to deliver a mare to Adam Samuels. I thought I'd stop in and see Micah. When I walked into his office Len Richards was telling Micah his brother had been killed in cold blood and he was a witness. Len Richards
told Micah to arrest me. I had no idea what was going on. Richards was positive that I was the one who killed his brother. Micah told him to calm down and tell us what happened. He told us that he and Ab were riding the fence when they came across a dead steer. They stopped to investigate. He was sure no disease killed that steer because it had been slaughtered. "Are you saying I killed it?" "I'm saying you killed my brother!" Said Richards. He told Micah that there was another cowboy with me and we were roasting the beef. It's when he asked me to make good for the steer is when I shot his brother. I denied it. I had no idea what he was talkin' about. I hadn't been up in Red Wing in months. He told us this happened two days ago just after dark. "It couldn't have been Lucas! He was right here in town two days ago. I saw him at the auction!" Said Micah. "That's right; I sold one of my mares!" I told Richards. He insisted it was me. He felt he knew me long enough to know it was me. He said I was carrying my rifle. Micah ask him if this man was dressed like me. Richards said I was wearing some kind of a blanket coat. I told him to take a good look at my face. "It was your face! It was unshaven, dirty and you had a mustache. There was a scar....." Richards stopped. I showed him that I had no scar and he could see I don't wear a mustache. He had come a long way and it seems like it had been for nothing. He said he better be leaving. I told him he should stay in town overnight. Micah said he'd walk over to the hotel with Richards. I told Micah I was going to deliver that Mare to Samuels and then I was heading home.
Bantry and K. C. headed for North Fork. The first thing they did was head for the saloon. Bantry walked in and demanded a drink. Sweeney was busy and said he'd be with them in a moment.
Bantry walked over to the saloon girl. "We want a drink! And one for the lady," said Bantry as he cupped her chin in his hand. "First time you ever took any notice of me Mr. Mc.....Cain." She stopped. "Hold on Lucas," said Sweeney. The saloon girl was scared. Something didn't feel right. When she tried to leave Bantry grabbed her and told her she was staying with him. Bantry then walked up to the bar and tapped Sweeney with his rifle. "I said I want some whiskey!" Sweeney apologized to Bantry and told him he took him for somebody else. "I thought for sure you were Lucas McCain!" Said Sweeney. "Whiskey!" Sweeney kept starring at Bantry; he just couldn't get over how much this man looked like me. "What are you gawking at.....like I'm McCain?" "You two sure enough alike to be brothers," said Sweeney. Bantry grabbed Sweeney and asked him what he knew about his brothers. He then asked where I lived. He told Bantry that I lived about three miles out on the south road. He motioned for Sweeney to pour him a drink. Sweeney was so nervous that when he poured Bantry's drink he spilled some. Bantry told him about it. He then hit Sweeney's arm and the bottle broke. "Now you spilled it all," said Bantry. Sweeney cleaned up the mess. Sweeney told him he was all thumbs that maybe he should pour his own. Bantry was going on about rotten whiskey, rotten town. People all mangy and rotten. It's the best we got.....whiskey.....town and people. Sweeney told them about some bigger towns to the south. That made Bantry mad. He grabbed Sweeney off of his ladder and place his rifle around his neck. "Now are you trying to tell us to get out of town?" "Now you listen to me. My name is Bantry! Earl Bantry! I don't want no one tellin' me I look like this McCain. You understand?" Sweeney was scared. He told him he did. Just then one of the cowboys that was in the saloon ran out and over to get Micah. Was only a matter of seconds and Micah was on his way over. As soon as Micah walked into the saloon he knew this was the man that Richards was talking about.
He walked up to Bantry and told him that he and partner was to go along with him. He told Bantry that a man fitting his description killed Ab Richards up in Red Wing. Bantry told Micah that he's not the only one fittin' that description. Micah told him that I had been cleared. He told him there was a witness in town and thought he could identify him. Just then K. C. distracted Micah and Bantry hit him over the head with a whiskey bottle. Bantry then picked up his rifle. He was going to kill Micah but K. C. talked him out of it. They then headed to my ranch.
Mark was getting supper around when he heard Bantry and K. C. ride up. He thought it was me. They busted right in. Bantry told K. C. to check the barn. Mark asked him who he was. Bantry checked around to see if I was there. Mark started for the front door but Bantry stopped him. Bantry asked Mark where I was. Mark told him I was at some neighbors delivering a horse. He asked Mark if he was my boy. Mark nodded yes. He then asked if anyone else lived here? Mark shook his head no. He asked Mark when I would be back. "I don't know!" Bantry decided they were staying for supper. K. C. wanted to leave but Bantry wouldn't hear of it. He grabbed K. C.. That's something you
don't do is tell Bantry what to do. Even K. C. was afraid of Bantry. Bantry told Mark to set a couple extra places for supper. Mark told him there wasn't enough. He asked Mark where I kept my whiskey. If I tell you will you go away?" Earl mocked him....."If I tell you will you go away?" When Mark wouldn't tell him he started looking for himself breaking whatever was in his way. Mark rushed to the cupboard where I kept it and gave it to Bantry. They made themselves right at home. Mark walked up to the table. Slammed the glasses down on the table. "There's only enough for Pa and me! Now you better leave before he comes home and finds out what you did! Or you'll really be sorry mister!" Bantry laughed and said about Mark being spunky. Mark went back to getting supper while Bantry and K. C. waited for me.
When I walked in the door K. C. was setting at our table. I asked him who he was. Just then Bantry came from behind the door. Mark had tried to warn me but couldn't. I told him to stay out of the way. Bantry was even surprised of our resemblance. He even remarked that it was like himself looking in a mirror glass. "You know.....you could be my brother." Said Bantry. "Except McCain's more prettier then you are Earl." He told Earl to shut up. I asked him what he was doing here. "I heard so much about you that I kinda wanted to see for myself." I accused him of killing Ab Richards. He knew who I meant. K. C. Showed him my rifle. He cocked the lever and it went off. He liked that. Hekept laughing and shooting the rifle. When I thought I had a chance to go at him he hit me in the stomach with the butt of my rifle. He told me not to make another mistake.
I told him they got what they wanted. They should leave. He laughed and said they weren't welcome here. Then he started to tell me about how Micah tried to take him in. He wasn't takin' anything from anybody. He was tired of being pushed. He had two brothers that use to ride him. Bigger and older and me just a kid. They beat him every chance they had until he grew up. Then he gave them back everything they gave him.....double. He killed them both. The more he talked the angrier he got. "You killed your own brothers?" I asked. He went crazy. He said I killed them. He was takin' it out on me. He started beating on me. He just kept hitting me over and over again. K. C. was holding Mark back as he struggled to get free to try and help me. Bantry then caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror. He took his fist and smashed it.
When Bantry was done Mark got a cloth and tended to me. Bantry took the bottle of whiskey and smashed it against the fireplace. K. C. was upset. They were out of whiskey. I told him there was a town about three hours south, he could get all the liquor he wanted. I told K. C. Bantry was lucky to have a friend like him. He was the only one who made any sense. I told them had it not been for K. C. Bantry would have been hung along time ago. If he hurt Marshal Torrance the whole town would be looking for him. I told K. C. the best thing for his friend was to get movin'. "Fast!" That made K. C. nervous. He wanted to leave. Bantry told him to go it alone. K. C. didn't want to break up. Bantry told him he didn't need him. "You mean that Earl? You don't need me?" Bantry said he meant it. K. C. started backing up to the door. He opened
the door and when he turned to leave Bantry killed him. This was the chance I had been waiting for. I rushed Bantry. We scuffled for the rifle. It went off and Bantry was shot. He was dead. Just then Micah rode up and rushed into the house.
We went into town with Micah to let Richards know about Bantry. "I'll never forget that Earl Bantry," said Mark. "Hope you'll be able to forgive me Lucas," said Richards. "It was a honest mistake Len, forget it." "I'll never forget it. Him beaten up on you and then smashing his own face in the lookin' glass," said Mark. "Well he wanted me as a whipping boy. But his real problem was himself." "Oh I see.....he want to hurt you cause you looked like him, Guess he felt like Cain when he killed his brother Able." said Mark. "You studied your Bible real good Mark," said Micah. "Say.....how about us having something to eat," said Micah. Richards said it would be his pleasure if we would all join him at the hotel as his guest. Mark asked if he could have anything he wanted. "Sure Mark.....why do you asked?" Said Richards. "You see.....last night Mark cooked a stew and I don't think it turned out to well," I said. "Oh.....what are you gonna have?" Asked Richards. "Well.....anything. Just so long as it's not stew," said Mark. "That figures!" I said. We laughed and headed over to the hotel.
piddlin' stuff.....Chuck Connors starred as Lucas McCain/Earl Bantry. I love this episode! I really enjoyed watching Chuck as a bad guy. Earl reminds me of Chucks character Buck Hannassey in "The Big Country." Very good movie!
Well lets see now, we have as far as Lucas worst enemies, Charlie Gordo (Lon Chaney Jr.) in 'Gun Fire' is right up there with Dan Maury (Lee Van Cleef) in 'The Deadly Wait'. Now I think we could add Bantry to this list. Even Mark said he'd never forget how he beat up Lucas and then smashing his own face in the lookin' glass. But then we know what happened to all of them, don't we? "What say you?"Leonard Stone appeared in 'Deadly Image' as K.C. Peters. He was the sidekick of Lucas's
