The Rifleman
"Welcome to the McCain Ranch"
'Outlaw's Shoes'
Episode 141

Mark and I had gone to visit an old friend.  I had left Mark with Mr. Stevens while I went to a yearling sale.  I thought while I was in Red Creek I'd stop at the Gun Shop and get a new spring for my rifle.  While heading into town I was bushwhacked.  The bullet grazed my head, knocked me off of my horse and left me unconscious.  I had no idea at the time that the outlaw who bushwhacked me took my rifle and planted his own gun on me and traded horses with me.  I had amnesia.  The name on the pistol was George Vale.  I had no reason to believe that I was not him.  Not only did I believe I was this George Vale but I was also a feared outlaw wanted for robbery and murder.

When I got to Red Creek I went to the Doctor's office to have him take a look at my head.  He told me how lucky I was.  He was sure that it was just a bullet crease done with a rifle.  I asked him if he had ever seen me before.  He said he hadn't.  I told him I didn't know who I was and that I woke up with my head hurting about an hour ago.  What happened before that and where I came from or where I was going I had no idea.  He said he wasn't surprised.  He said that I was shot at close range and my loss of memory should come back in a few days as the concussion wore off.  He noticed the gun I was wearing.  He took it out of the holster.  "Well there shouldn't be much of a mystery to who you are."  "George Vale!"  Said Doc Carter as he dropped the gun like it was contaminated.  Well that cleared that up or so I thought.  When I wanted to pay him he refused.  I asked him what was wrong with my money.  He said not knowing who I was would enable me to be able to sleep tonight.  He picked up my hat.  "Good day Mr. Vale!"

I took my horse over to the livery stable.  I told the man at the livery stable I would be staying at the hotel for the night and wanted to leave my horse here.  He said that my horse looked like one of the Weiden horses.  I thought maybe my name might mean something to him.  When I said the name George Vale he got all nervous and scared.  "Well.....lots of horses look alike Mr. Vale! I wasn't questioning it not being your horse!"  I asked him if there was any doubt.  "None Mr. Vale.....none at all!"

I thought I would go and talk to the Sheriff.  Maybe he could shed some light on this.  As I was heading towards the Sheriff's office I had a weird feeling when I walked passed the Gun  Shop.  I didn't know why.  The Sheriff asked me what brought me to Red Creek.  I told him I wish I had an answer to that myself.  I told him about being bushwhacked and about not remembering anything before.  "Too bad that bushwhacker didn't have a straighter aim," said the Sheriff.  I told him I came here for an answer.  I asked him who was George Vale.  I mentioned to him about my passing the Gun Shop and that I felt it had a special meaning to me.  Except for that one clean thought I felt like I had just been born.  "Are you trying to tell me Vale, you don't know your a wanted man?"  "A wanted man? What am I wanted for?" I asked him.  He said it would be easier to tell me what I wasn't wanted for.  There was wanted dead or alive posters all over Wyoming on me for murder and robbery.  He said he was just on his way to the telegraph office hoping a wire will find I was wanted some place in this territory.  I asked him if he had ever seen me before.  He then got out the wanted poster on Vale.  "Six foot five.....two hundred pounds.....not many men walking around fit that description! And carrying that murdering gun you're so proud of. You had your name put on the handle. Now listen to me Vale.....I want you out of town by the end of the day.....one.....I wouldn't be surprised if some hot heads around here decided to do the world a favor and string you up.....two.....I'm liable to forget I'm a lawman, if I see you walking around this town and come after you
myself!"  He then headed over to the telegraph office.

As the morning went on, Mark thought about riding into Red Creek to meet me.  Stevens said that Mark was not to forget he was expectin' us back for supper.  He planned on having venison.  Mark told him that we'd be sure and bring back a couple of big appetites after that long ride.  Mark then headed for Red Creek.

When Mark rode into Red Creek the first place he started for was the Gun Shop.  Just as he got there he noticed I was coming out of the Sheriff's office.  Mark came up to me.  "Pa.....I've been waitin' for you at the ranch. I finally decided to ride into Red Creek and see if you....."  He stopped.  He was puzzled by the look on my face.  He asked if there was something wrong.  "Why do you call me Pa, boy?"  "Because you are my ....."   He laughed.  "You must be foolin' me again."  "I'm not foolin'.....who are you?"  He laughed again.  He noticed the bandage on my head and asked if I was hurt.  I asked him his name.  "Are.....you.....playin' a game?" Asked Mark.  "Is your name Vale?" I asked.  "You know it's not," said Mark.  I then asked him what his name was.  "Mark McCain. McCain.....same as your name is."  I told him my name was Vale.  I showed him my gun.  He knew something was wrong.  He said I was to wait there and he would get the doctor.

Mark ran to the doctors.  The doctor was busy and said I'd have to wait.  He said as soon as he got done with his patient he would be with him.  Mark had no choice but to wait.

I had gone over to the livery stable to get my horse.  I tried to saddle him but I was too weak. Three cowboys rode into town.  The one man I had met earlier when I brought my horse to the stables.  He had gone to get the other two men.  The man told him I was in the stables now.  I then heard one of the men yell....."I wonder what kind of a man it takes to shoot a 16 year old in the back for a horse!"  "George Vale! We're comin' in! You better have a gun in your hand."  Before I knew it they were right in front of me.  They told me I better get on my feet.  They would give me to the count of three to draw.  The one man started counting.  "I'm not drawing. I've got no quarrel with you two that I know about."  They decided they would beat me with a whip instead and then turn me over to the Sheriff.

Mark was gettin' tired of waiting on the Doc.  He decided to walk outside and wait.  Just then they dragged me out of the stables.  Mark came running to my side.  Calling me 'Pa.'  They were surprised to learn that Vale had a son.  The one brother, Frank, told Mark they were going to hang me.  Just then the Sheriff came up to see what was going on.  They told him about Vale shooting their brother in the back at the line shack and took his horse.  The one I rode in on.  The sheriff said it looked like Vale overstepped himself, that I was in a town that tries and hangs the same day.  They wouldn't listen to Mark.  They tried to tell Mark that I had been raising him under another name.  Mark told him about us staying at the Stevens ranch and Stevens could tell them who I was.  Mark told them that Stevens knew us long before he was born.  That we lived in the same town back in Oklahoma.  The Sheriff then sent the man from the livery stable to fetch Stevens.

Me having their brother's horse, was good enough for the Weiden brother's.  They went to the saloon to get some backin'.  They wanted to hang me.

Mark took me into the livery stable out of the hot sun.  He tended to me and my cuts from the whip.

Joe Weiden brought a mob to the Sheriff's office. He told them to wait outside while he went to talk to the Sheriff.  When he saw that the Sheriff was on the side of the law and not with them he pulled his gun on him and locked him up in a cell.  He told him he would let him out in an hour.

We heard noises outside of the livery stable.  Mark went to see what was going on.  They came to hang me.  Mark tried to hold them back, but couldn't.  As the mob was dragging me out of the livery stable Vale and his partner, Jeems rode into town.  They recognized me. They stood and watched.  Vale was pleased, he was going to get to see the town hang George Vale.  Jeems was getting on edge with everything that was going on, he wanted to leave.  But Vale wasn't ready.  He told Jeems to take it easy, nobody knew them.  They slowly went for their horses.

As I was struggling to get free I grabbed one of the cowboys pistol from his holster. I threatened to kill anyone who tried to stop me from leaving.  While this was going on the man from the stables rode in with Stevens.  Stevens told me everything was all straightened out and to put down the gun.  Mark tried telling me everything was alright too.  But I wouldn't listen.  I wasn't given anyone a chance to change their minds about me being George Vale.  Stevens started towards me.  I shot to the ground as to warn him not to come any closer.

Mark ran up to me.  "It's true Pa.....everyone believes who you are now!"  "You get back boy! I don't want to hurt you.....go on," as I shoved him away.  Stevens told Mark the best thing to do right now was to let me ride out.  I had been through so much that nothing made any sense now.  I started to back up slowly and went for the first horse I came to.  In a distance Mark could see Razor and my rifle.   "Pa, behind ya'! There's your horse and your rifle. You remember your rifle? You were coming into town to get it fixed at the Gun Shop."  That sounded familiar.  I slowly backed up towards Razor.  Jeems pushed Vale aside and started shooting.  Vale approached me and hit me from behind.  The Weiden brothers realized they had made a mistake and started shooting at Vale and Jeems.  They ended up in a gun battle with Vale and Jeems dead.  Mark, Steven and the Weiden brothers  rushed over to me.  "I guess we owe your Pa.....an apology son," said Frank Weiden.  "I told you that he was Lucas McCain.....a rancher and.....my Pa."  "When you say Pa, sounds good to me.....son. I'm a.....rancher?"  Mark nodded.  "It's a small place.....but we're sure happy there."  "After a while.....after being wanted for robbery and murder.....small ranch sounds good to me too.....Son."

When we got back to the ranch I made us a nice meal.  It was pretty good if I say myself.  Mark asked me if I was remembering more things.  Some things were coming back, something's were still a little hazy.  That gave Mark an idea.  "How about dishes?"  "Dishes?" I asked.  "We use to have an arrangement where one night you'd wash 'em and the next night I would," said Mark.  "Ohhhhh.....yes.....I remember that arrangement."  "Well tonight's your night to wash 'em Pa!"  "Mark ya' know.....an important thing like who's turn it is to do the dishes, a man doesn't forget. And one of the first things I remembered was that.....tonight is your turn.....to do the dishes."  He looked at me and with a sigh said....."I guess your memory is coming back."  As he started to go do the dishes he turned and came back to the table.  "Pa.....I really wouldn't have taken advantage of you."  "I know you wouldn't Son. Look, I'll do the dishes tonight. This is one time I'd find pleasure in doing the chores. You sit down."   "Alright," said Mark as he sat in the chair a smile from ear to ear.
