The Rifleman
"Welcome to the McCain Ranch"
'The Boarding House'
Episode 22
Mark and I had just got into town, when I thought I had seen a familiar face from the past. As she walked past me, I grabbed a hold of her and she turned to me and says "why do you stop me, I don't know you." No she didn't know me, but I remembered her, 'Big Anna'. Just then Micah came up to me and introduced Julia. He was telling me what an overnight success she has had with 'The Boarding House.' I told Micah that I thought I had met Miss Julia before. She insisted she would have remembered me had she ever met me and excused herself, but had left an invite for dinner.
I began to tell Micah about 'Big Anna.' Twelve years ago she was dealing a thieves game at Bismarck. She took a friend of mine for eleven hundred dollars. Micah hopes that I am mistaken and makes it a point to tell me that people do change. Her kind? I make him aware that it is very unlikely. But he accuses me of passing judgment. We part ways and I head on over to talk to Julia.

She was serving dinner so we exit into the kitchen so we can talk in private. "You don't belong here!" I tell her. She tells me I have no right to tell her that, that I don't run the town. "No I don't run the town, but I trade here and my boy goes to school here." I also tell her we don't want her kind here. "My kind, do you know my kind?" she says. She insists she is just what I see now. A woman running a boarding house. This is her beginning and her end. She is happy with it. She is tired of running. I try to refresh her memory and I proceed to tell her about my friend that she cheated twelve years ago. He was just a kid and it was every cent he had in the world. She remembers. She also remembers she had no choice. She insists it was her job. She says she quit, but she cannot quit, as much as she tried. She would run away, but, somebody always finds 'Big Anna.' She wants this to be her chance. I feel she is sincere. She did make a mistake a long time ago and I just made one now. We now understand each other. I ask if the invitation to dinner is still good.

Mark and I are headed into town to have dinner at Julia's. Today is Julia's day for baking cookies. Mark is anxious to lick the cookie bowl clean. I tell Mark to go ahead and tell Julia I'll be there soon. I want to do Julia a favor. I go into talk to John Hamilton and hope that he and his cousin, Agnes will join us for dinner that evening. Julia had hoped for sometime that John would come to dinner. John agreed. I can't wait to tell her that they will be here tonight for dinner. She is so excited! She is nervous and anxious. She chases us out of her kitchen so she can prepare for the evening.

You can tell Miss Agnes is not comfortable here and is not enjoying her dinner at all. Mark notices that Miss Hamilton had not finished her dinner. "You didn't clean your plate, lady." "After we are better acquainted you may call me Miss Agnes, she replies." He told her if she would pull a trick like that out at our ranch, it would be Miss Mud. "No harm meant Miss Agnes Hamilton, only my Pa says, lettin' good food go to waste is a crime, what with starvin' people all over we got no time to be finicky." She understands and wants no more said about it. "Pa had to take a belt to my britches before I understood. Course if you were to finish your dinner I don't think he'd do anything. With you being a female, kinda old and all."  By that time I take the boy by the ear and out of the room.

While I was in the kitchen with the boy, Sid Fallon and his gang barge into Julia's. He tells everyone to leave, he wants to have a talk with 'Big Anna.' "This Boarding House is closed temporarily. Get out, all of you!" He claims he is co-owner of Big Anna's, North Fork's, newest saloon. Wine, dine and gamble. Anna gets upset and the women start to fight. I hear all the racket and I come out into the dining room to see what is going on. I grab my rifle and take charge and tell them to be out of town by tomorrow. Fallon say, "nobody runs him out of town, nobody." She had worked for him years ago. They want to make sure she gets back where she belongs, with them. Unless she lets him turn the establishment into a saloon and gambling hall, He will reveal her sordid past. He reminds her she is carrying his mark. Julia has a scar on her left cheek from Fallon, where he cut her with his knife. As I approach him Julia pleaded with me to let him go.

John graciously tells Anna the dinner was delicious She invites him to come again. Agnes speaks up and say "I think not! I'm afraid 'Big Anna' is going into business with her old friends. After tonight she won't have enough respectable business to stay open for a day. She'll see to that!"

Fallon and his gang set out to destroy Julia's reputation. But they weren't aware that John, Micah and I had already got to the towns people and were ready for them. Micah told the ladies to be on the 2 o'clock stage. He tells Fallon and Steve to be on the 4 o'clock stage.
Fallon, angered by their treatment, figures if he cut one man down to size, he can send for them later! So he heads for 'The Boarding House' and Lucas McCain. He enters thru the back door and takes Julia and me by surprise. Fallon has a knife and threatens to cut me up and make me crawl. Then when he gets done with me he will work on Julia. "Kill her if she moves, Steve, I'm gonna work on him. I told you before friend, nobody runs Sid anymore, nobody." He starts to attack me with his knife and when I try to get it from him he slashes my arm. I keep trying to defend myself and at the same time try and get the knife from him and he cuts me again, this time in the shoulder. I see a meat cleaver lying on rack on the table. I manage to grab it and get a hold of him and slam him up against the door. Angrily, I slam the cleaver at him, but into the door. Missing Fallon, I throw him against the wall and he falls to the floor. I tell him to pick up the knife, but he won't. He's had enough! Julia thought I should have killed him, but I couldn't, he gave me an even break, he deserved the same. He has to live with his past. She doesn't have to anymore, because she is welcome here in North Fork!
