The Rifleman
"Welcome to the McCain Ranch"
'The Raid'
Episode 37

It was a hot day to be chopping wood, but I needed to get this done.  Mark had finished up his chores and saw how hot and tired I was.  He brought me a drink and told me to take it easy, and said he would cut some wood a while.  I took him up on the offer.  He stopped chopping wood for a bit and started to look over the land.  "Pa.....do you ever get that feeling that we are the only two people in the whole world?"  "Sometimes I do son when I look out at that prairie. It's a big hard land Mark. Out here everybody gets lonely one time or another."  I told him that was enough wood for now, it was time for supper.  We started to gather up the wood when suddenly an arrow flew past my left shoulder and hit the barn.  I pushed Mark out of the line of fire and told him to get down.  I then picked up my rifle and started shooting.  While I was busying trying to keep Mark and I safe from the Indians, I was unaware that one had crept up along side of the barn.  He then knocked me out.   Mark tried to fight them off the best he could, but they got the best of him.  They grabbed him and slung him over one of their horses.  I came to long enough to see 5 or 6 Apaches making off with my son.

When I came to I was in my bed with Micah and Hattie standing over me.  "Hello Lucas" said Micah.  "You're a hard man to kill."  I asked Micah how long it had been since the raid.  He told me it had been just last night and he said Caleich came by and found me lying on the ground.  "Go after them Micah."  "We're leaving now.....it will soon be sun up," said Micah.  "It would have been a waste of time trying to track them in the dark," said Micah.  "Why did they take Mark?"  I yearned for an answer.  Hattie came over to comfort me.  My vision was blurred; I thought I saw an Apache standing in the doorway.  I tried to reach for my rifle, but I was too weak and my rifle was out of reach.  I heard him call my name.  "Lucas.....we've been friends a long time, I hope you don't let what happen last night change that."  It was San Buckhart, my friend.  He had heard of 'The Raid' and had come to see if he could help.  I told him I was sorry and for a minute he looked like one of them.  He told me it was Chaqua who took my boy.  "Sam.....Why did he take my son?"  Buckhart told me that Chaqua was a renegade again.  He told me Chaqua had come for Mark, not for the horses and not to kill.  He wanted to make an Apache out of him.  Chaqua's son had died two months ago.  He wanted to find himself another son, one whose father was known to be a brave man.  He chose Mark.  He told me he would find Mark and bring him back to me if he could.  That wasn't good enough, I wanted to find Mark and bring him back, not if I could, but because I had too!

The posse rode out just before dawn.  I rested until daylight, I couldn't wait any longer.  I thanked Hattie for closing the store and for taking care of me.  She handed me my hat and my canteen.  "I won't say for you not to go Lucas...." love that boy too much." "Lucas.....the thing is to stay alive. Ride easy."  It took all the strength I had to get onto my horse and ride off.

I rode as hard as I could until I finally caught up with the posse.  Some of the men were angry.  Micah wanted to push on, but Toomey told the others it was no use, he felt there was no way they would be able to bring Mark back.  I felt that Micah was starting to have some doubt's too.  Toomey also said that the Indians had too much of a lead on us.  "I have a wife.....two small son.....I shouldn't have come along in the first place," said Toomey.  Micah turned to Clay and asked him what he thought.  Clay agreed with Toomey.  "Mark is gone," said Clay.  Toomey wanted to turn back.  "Alright Toomey.....go ahead. No ones gonna stop you," said Micah.  I rode into their little meeting and went up to Toomey and told him that was up to him what he did, he could turn back if he wanted to.  Sam then came up to me and told me we would move out in the morning.  "I can't see in the dark and I don't want you dropping out of the saddle on me," said Sam.  I knew he was right.  He helped me out of my saddle.  While I went and rested Micah and Sam unsaddled my horse for me and they had everyone else do the same.

It was getting colder.  Sam brought my jacket over to me and helped me put it on.  I asked him if it would be better to travel by night and try to out guess them.  He didn't think it was a good idea.  He felt you couldn't out guess an Apache.  "Not even by another one," asked Caleich.  Sam told him he was a tamed Apache that put him at a disadvantage.  "Do you really want to find them Buckhart?" Asked Caleich.  "I hear them Apaches really have a time for themselves when they catch a tame one!"  I told Caleich to let Sam alone.  "Your son Lucas.....your hunt," said Caleich as he walked away.  I asked Sam how much longer.  He said he didn't know, but he felt they stopped running.  I told Buckhart to spell it out for me.  He felt that they would be waiting for us.  I asked him if he knew Chaqua.  "I know of him. He's a brave man. His son died last winter, he was ten years old."

The next day we started on our journey.  We came to a narrow pass surrounded my boulders and cliffs.  Sam told us that they had gone thought the narrow passage.  He said it would be a good spot for an ambush and suggested we go around.  I asked him how long that would take.  He said a day.....day and a half.  I didn't want to waste any more time.  Like Caleich said....."Your son Lucas.....your call."  I made the decision to go through the passage.  We drew our weapons and approached the passage slowly.  Sam went first and I went next.  One by one we started through the passage.  They were waiting for us.  They attacked us from behind and killed one of our men and wounded another.  I took aim and shot one.  We all took cover as Buckhart checked the area to see if they were still here.  "They're gone!" Yelled Buckhart.  I told Buckhart they were close and I thought we should go after them.  But Buckhart disagreed.  "Not this way.....only by stealth now.....they out number us," said Buckhart.  I said we would bury the man who got killed.  "He died for nothing!" "Your boys dead!" Insisted Toomey.

After we had the burial, Toomey confronted me and insisted we go back.  I told him to go back with Caleich, that I wouldn't stop them, but not to try and stop me.  "You have no right to kill those men too!" Shouted Toomey.  "My boys up there. He's alive!"  "If I thought he was still alive, I'd be the last to turn back!" Exclaimed Toomey.  "Ask your friend there.....the Apache don't give their prisoners back Lucas!"  I grabbed Toomey as he started to walk away.  "I need help Toomey!"  "I counted five or six of them!"  "I need help!"  "No Lucas," Said Toomey.  "He died for nothing."  "The boys lost to you."  With that Toomey walked away.  I couldn't give up, I had to keep trying.  I had to know for sure.  My son is only lost to me when I give up searching.  The others went back with Toomey.  It was just Micah, Buckhart and myself left to search for my son.

We kept going until I couldn't go any longer.  I fell out of my saddle.  Micah and Buckhart rushed to my side.  Micah insisted we make camp.  They made me as comfortable as they could.  It was cold, they kept piling blanket after blanket on me.  Micah insisted they weren't enough and wanted to build a fire.  But Buckhart refused, we couldn't let the Apaches know where we were.  They kept arguing.  I told them not to build a fire.  Micah was worried about me.  He walked away, worried.  Buckhart followed.  "He's a strong man Micah, he'll live."  Micah was concerned; would I make it without Mark?  He was even wondering himself.  I overheard them talkin.  Buckhart said he would go on alone tomorrow.  He wanted Micah to take me back.  I drew my rifle on the two of them.  "You take me back and I'll kill ya'."  Micah asked if I thought I could be of any help.  I told him that Mark was my son and one man alone couldn't do it.  I didn't want anther dead man fighting my fight.  I told them I just wanted to get a little sleep and then we would be able to go on.

Micah went to tend to the horses.  Buckhart came over to me and asked me to listen to him for a while.  "Lucas.....do you know what the Apache word churenga means?"  I told him I thought it meant.....'hunt.'  "Not just that.....in English you would say an acquired hunt. A still hunt, by stealth.....alone. It's an Apache word Lucas.....it's a thing the Apache can do better then anybody else in the world. Chaqua will not leave his horses. They are to an Indian what gold is to a white man. He must go along the mountains.....then around and over into Arizona. I can go up Lucas.....I can save a day, maybe more. I can follow him. You know the Cherokee.....but I know the Apache."  I listened to Buckhart as he told me about the Apache, I knew some of what he was saying was right, but I still felt in my heart that not one man could do it alone.  "Even the Apache must sleep.....that's when you must take them Lucas.....when they sleep. Toomey was right; the Apache does not give back prisoners.

Buckhart then went over to Micah and told him he would go on for about two miles.....the climb should be easier there.  "I'll say it again Sam," said Micah.  "One man is not enough."  "We'll see," said Buckhart as he started off on his journey.

I rested long enough to be able to go.  Micah was sleeping, so I quietly got my rifle and started off on foot, not too far behind Buckhart.

Buckhart tried to sneak into their camp but was quickly captured.  It didn't matter how quiet he was, they knew he was there sometime before he was captured.
Everyone was awoken by all the commotion going.  Chaqua recognized Buckhart.  Artak wanted Buckhart for himself; he had waited a long time for this opportunity.  Chaqua told him that they would take Buckhart with them.  Artak want Chaqua to kill Mark.  He told him that he meant death to them, he could smell it.  "Let the man with the rifle bury him," said Artak.  They argued.  Chaqua wanted to make Mark an Apache.  "The sun will change his skin, and I will change his heart," said Chaqua.  "I give this boy my love and protection."  "He is my son."  "One more night we camp then we are home."  He told Artak to tie up Buckhart and the Chaqua went over to Mark.  He wanted to know if Buckhart was his friend.  Mark just stood there and didn't answer.  "You know him boy?"  Mark then starting hitting on Chaqua with his fist and started to cry.  Chaqua says, "Apaches do not cry. Only the women." He then walked away.

It was morning before I happened across Chaqua's band of Indians.  They still had Mark, but now they had Buckhart.  I slowly followed them with caution, remembering what Buckhart had told me.  It was night before I caught up to them again.  They had made camp for the night.  Artak was troubled; he was very uncomfortable having Mark and Buckhart with them.  As I slowly crawled closer to their camp, I tried not to make as noise, but I stepped on a twig and alerted Artak that I was there.  He let out a whoop and started for me with his tomahawk.  I quickly shot off four rounds killing Artak and some of the other Indians.  Just as Mark jumped out from behind a fallen tree stump and called my name, Chaqua attacked me.  While Mark untied Buckhart, Chaqua and I fought with great strength between us.  There was a lot at stake here; I was fighting to save Mark, Buckhart and myself.  If I lost, so did they.  I finally had him pinned and had my hands around his throat.  He kept trying to push me away as my grip grew tighter and tighter around his neck.  Slowly he was losing strength as his hands slowly started to go limp. "You took my boy! You took my boy!"  The next thing I remembered was Mark and Buckhart calling my name and pulling me off of Chaqua and then embracing my son.  I killed Chaqua with my bare hands.  I had Mark back, that's all that matter to me now.  I put my hand on Buckhart's shoulder, never saying a word, he knew how I felt.  There were no words, between Buckhart and I, no words of thanks that could describe how I felt at that moment and how I appreciated my friends help.

Chaqua wanted to find himself another son; my son, he wanted one whose father was known to be a brave man.  He didn't know just how brave a man I was and what I would do to get my son back and that Mark is my strength!

*What say you?
At the end of 'The Raid' when you see Lucas & Chaqua fighting and Lucas is strangling Chaqua, did Lucas strangle Chaqua to death or did he render him unconscious?
I'd like to hear your opinion.

Do you know who played Cochise in the one hour made for TV show of Broken Arrow that launched the TV series?
Michael Ansara  was also in an episode of "Branded" called 'Bounty.'

Robert Foulk played Toomey in several episodes of  "The Rifleman." Remember him in 'The Raid?' Do you know what Toomey's first name was?
They call Robert Foulk. Toomey several times through this episode.  But the credits say his name is "Johannson."  You know, I can't help but think how much of a coward Toomey was and if the cowboy boot would be on the other foot, we all know Lucas would not have turned back, he would help get Toomey or whoever son was taken get his son back!  "What say U?"

Michael Forest as Chaqua.  He was the Indian who took Mark to make an Apache out of him! Chaqua's own son had died two months earlier.
Six-foot-three and weighing in at a lean, mean 215, Michael Forest was a rugged-looking addition to the Roger and Gene Corman's list of leading men during their 1950s heyday.
He appeared in
"Branded" as Newt Woolery in 'Yellow for Courage.'  He has done several voices for "The Power Rangers."  You should see his list of credit, you name it he did it!

Pat Hogan played Artak.  He was the Indian who confronted Chaqua about killing Mark.
He appeared with Johnny Crawford in "Indian Paint" after "The Rifleman" and appeared in "Savage Sam" as Broken Nose

Clancy Cooper as Caleich.  He was the Indian who was on guard the night that Buckhart came into their camp.  He appeared in 35 Broadway plays before going to Hollywood where he made 60 films and 200 TV episodes.  He has appeared in just about every TV Western that was made.

Hope Summers as Hattie Denton, owner of The General Store.  Hope Summers appeared in 16 episodes as Hattie Denton.  Hattie was first introduced to "The Rifleman" in 'Eight Hours to Die.'
