I just got Mark off to school and was finishing shaving when I heard someone ride up. It was Sam Morley. "Been a long time hasn't it Lucas?" Asked Sam. Yes it had been a long time. I thought they shot him down in Rio Grande three years ago. I asked him why he ran out. He didn't really know anymore, he just figured he was too good with a gun to waste his time punching cattle. Sam rememberedhow I used to talk about having a ranch like this someday. A fine woman, have a son. He heard that when Margaret died I had sold out and that I had moved out here with the boy. He started laughing. "Honest Lucas McCain! Huh?" "That's right Sam, how about you?" I asked. He told me they had stopped looking for him years ago. They think he's dead, but he's still worth $500. He showed me a wanted poster. I told him he better keep moving. He told me he came here for a reason. He wanted to give himself up. I don't understand, Sam give himself up! He asked if we could go inside. He told me that he needed the money. He felt I was the only man he could trust. He told me about this woman he had fallen in love with and that she took sick and wouldn't go thru with the marriage, not until she was well. So they took off for California, hoping that the climate would help her. Beth didn't know about his past. It would take $300 to probably save her life. With this money she could go to St. Louis where she could get medical care. He told me the other $200 I was to keep for my troubles. But of course there was a catch, he wanted her to have that money and be on the stage before I turned him in. I told him I couldn't do that, I didn't have that kind of money and I would have to raise the money first. I told him I was sorry, I just didn't have that kind of money. He said he would try and raise the money another way.
He had promised to himself that he would do this the honest way. As he started to leave I asked him "What if I could raise the money?" He said I had nothing to worry about that he would not run out on me. He asked me to go to North Fork with him where Beth was. He would stay in my sights the whole time. I agreed.
Mark was on his way to school when he heard Doc Burrage yell out to him to go to his office and get a bottle of white pills on the end of his desk and bring them up to him in room 205. Mark went and got the pills and took them to room 205 and knocked on the door. A lady answered the door, she looked worried. He gave the pills to the Doc and asked him if there was something else he could do for him. He told him no and to get on to school. As he was leaving he notices the lady was crying. He asked her if something was wrong. She asked him if he never seen a women cry before and then asked him if he ever saw his Mother cry. "No ma'am, my Mother is dead," said Mark. He was concerned and if something was wrong he would like to help. She told him that she would be most proud to ask if she would need him. "You're not very sick are you ma'am?" Asked Mark. She replied no.
Sam told Beth that with my help we would put her on the stage to St. Louis today. He assured her she would be alright. He got the Doc to agree. But Sam was not aware of how ill she really was.She wondered why Sam never mentioned me until today. She's didn't want Sam to borrow money. Sam didn't want to talk about it. He assured her he was going to be working for me on my ranch. She laughed; she knew Sam wasn't a farmer. Before they knew it, she would be well and he would be waiting for her.
Doc and I left Beth and Sam alone. I asked the Doc how long she had to live. He told me a month, but Beth didn't want Sam to know. Doc knew I didn't have any money to lend Sam and wondered what was going on. I just wanted to leave it like that for now and not get into it. He respected my wishes. The Doc and I parted ways. I headed over to the Marshal's office. As I crossed the street I ran into Hamp Ferris. I wondered what he was doing so far from Oklahoma. He wasn't about to tell me, he was afraid I would get in his way. He was a bounty hunter, and he didn't care how he got his man, just so he got him. I had a good idea what he was doing here. I had a feeling he was looking for Sam.
I went to see Micah, I knew he trusted me and I asked him how far I could influence him to take my word for something. "Like what?" asked Micah. I told him of "The Trade." I had to convince Micah to go along with this plan. I showed him the poster. He never saw it before. I told him that I wanted him to wire the Marshal in Santa Fe and tell him that he has Sam in custody and that he was captured by me, Lucas McCain, this morning and that he should wire him the money right away. He agreed not to ask any questionsand I told him if anything would go wrong I would be completely responsible. My ranch was worth more than $500, enough to cover "The Trade." Morley would be in his hands one hour after the money came in. He agreed and went to wire the Marshal.
Ferris was there questioning the telegraph clerk to whether or not he saw a man come thru town with a limp with a woman with him. He told him if he had seen them he wouldn't remember and if he did remember he wouldn't tell him. Ferris was upset with him and was about to use force when Micah walked in and told him he wanted to send a wire....."as is." Trager, the telegraph clerk, started to ask questions. "Where does Lucas McCain come in on this? I just went by the jail ten minutes ago. You mean McCain is holding this man Morley custody?" Micah said, "Would you please just send the wire?" said Micah. Now Ferris heard everything.
School left out early so Mark thought he would stop by and see the lady in room 205 and see how she was doing. She was busy packing her bags. Mark asked her if she was leaving. She told Mark she had to go away and that she had a rig at the stable and wanted to know how far she has to go to get a stage north? He told her it was about ten miles to Deer Crossing. She asked him to do her a favor. She gave Mark her Father's watch and asked him to take it to the jewelers andget it engraved. She gave him a note with the instructions on it and when the watch was finished he was to give it to Sam Morley, who had a room across the hall. She also gave him a letter to give him, but asked him not to do this until after she was gone.
I saw Mark with this pocket watch and I asked him where he got it. He told me that a lady asked him to keep a secret for her and asked him not to tell. I then asked him what the lady in room 205 asked him to do. He was surprised by my question. He told me that she planned on leaving town and after she had left he was to take the watch and note to Sam Morley. I took the watch from Mark and I went to see Beth. In the mean time Ferris saw Mark with me and asked him if he knew me and Mark told him that I was his Pa. He told Mark that he's been trying to catch up with me all day and that he is interested in buying some cattle. Mark told him I was up in the hotel with Sam Morley.
I told Beth that Mark didn't want to tell me about her, but I made him. I told her I knew why she was running away, I had talked to the Doctor. She didn't want Sam to know. She told me that she loved Sam and didn't want to take his money. I convinced her that getting this money for her was a justification for Sam Morley's whole life. "Don't rob him of giving it." Just then Sam came in and I reminded them that the stage would soon be here. I left so they could be alone and to wait for the stage. I went outside waiting for the stage to arrive when Ferris sneaked into the hotel and forced Eddie to tell him what room Morley was in. I saw the stagecoach in the distance and went to tell Sam the stage was here. As I entered the hotel I saw Ferris going up the steps and I called to him. I asked him where he was going. He told me he was taking Morley. I told him that Morley was mine. He told me that as long as Morley hadn't been turned in, that he was worth $500 to him. I told him to get down off the stairs and that we were going outback until the stage left. He slowly came down off the stairs and as he walked across the lobby, he turned and drew. I was ready for him and I shot and killed him.
piddlin' stuff.....Paul Richards as Sam Morley. Another excellent character actor!
I best remember him in an episode of "Gunsmoke"— 'Matt Gets It". He played Dan Grat, a gunslinger with a reputation forprovoking violence. He sets out to prove that even lawmen are expendable. He ruthlessly shoots down anyone who dares to upset the chip on his shoulder, including Matt. This was the premiere show of "Gunsmoke" and it was introduced by John Wayne.
He also appeared in "The Planet of the Apes," as Mendez.
Richards began acting professionally on radio in 1950. His distinctive voice was heard on many programs including
"Ford Theatre," "This is Your FBI," and "Escape."
He was the star of "Breaking Point." He had reoccurring roles on "Gunsmoke"—"Dragnet"—"Zane Gray Theatre"—"The Lawless Years"—'The Mod Squad"—"The Guns of Will Sonnett"—"Bonanza" and "The Untouchables" to name just a few.
After entering UCLA in 1946 to study psychology, Paul switched his major and earned a Masters Degree in Theater Arts from UCLA.Chris Alcaide played Hamp Ferris in this episode of 'The Trade.' He was the cowboy who wanted to turn Morley in for the reward.

Chris has worn this flower bolo in four episodes, can you name them?
A bola tie or bolo tie is a type of necktie consisting of a piece of cord fastened with an ornamental bar or clasp. The bola tie was created by Vic Cedarstaff in Wickenburg, Arizona and later patented. In the United States bola ties are widely associated with traditional cowboy dress, and are generally most common in the rural south of the country. The bola tie was made the official neckwear of Arizona in 1971.Katharine Bard as Beth Landis. Besides "The Rifleman" she has also appeared in "Alcoa Premiere"—"Alcoa Theatre"—"Alfred Hitchcock Presents"—"CBS Playhouse"—"Climax"—"Danger —"Front Row Center"—"Gunsmoke"—"Kraft Television Theatre"—"M Squad"—"Perry Mason "—"Peter Gunn"—"Playhouse 90"—"Studio 57"—"Studio One"—"Suspense"—"The Alfred Hitchcock Hour"—"The Armstrong Circle Theatre"—"The Big Valley"—"The F.B.I."—"The Jane Wyman Show"—"The June Allyson Show"—"The Lux Video Theatre"—"The Millionaire"
Edgar Buchanan as Doc Burrage. Edgar Buchanan appeared in 6 episodes of "The Rifleman." Five episodes as Doc Burrage and one as Grandpa Fogerty in 'The Long Goodbye.' There were two doctors before Doc Burrage although neither of them were ever named or given credit. Those two episodes were 'The Sharpshooter' and 'The Marshal.' In 'End of a Young Gun' Lucas told Hank he would go get Doc Sedley? Doc Burrage was first introduced to 'The Rifleman' in 'The Pet.'

'The Hangman' as Joe Hannah, the townsman that ease dropped outside of Micah's office when Lucas brought in Volney Adams and 'Miss Milly' as Jim Oxford, the townsman who Ryan & Adams ruffed up for payment due to Millie.

Dan had made several appearances in many of our favorite westerns such as "The Virginian"—"Tales of Wells Fargo"—"The Rebel"—"The Lawman"—"Gunsmoke"—"Maverick." He has done far more then I have listed here.
