"Good morning Micah," said Millie. "Mornin' Millie, coffee?" "No thanks, have you seen Mark?" Asked Millie. "Not since yesterday." "He's probably gone out to the ranch again," said Millie. "Have you heard from Lucas
," she asked. "No I haven't," said Micah. Millie was worried about Mark. "If he doesn't come back soon.....I'm afraid that boy will turn sick, he's so lonesome," said Millie. "I feel for him the same as you do Millie," said Micah. "He just seems convinced that.....that his father will never come back," said Millie. "Micah.....you know where Lucas is, don't you?" "Yes Millie, I know where he is." "Well then in the name of heaven, why don't you tell us?" "I mean.....a least tell Mark." "Last month when Lucas was wiped out along with everyone else he got himself a job." "A job that he'll earn enough to start all over again," said Micah. "What kind of a job?" Asked Millie. "Where?" "That information could cost Lucas his life Millie." "Now.....uh.....forget what I told you." Millie nodded and went back to her store.
I headed over to the trading post. I wanted to tell Forbes that I'd take that job offer.
Finny headed over to the saloon. He was anxious. He told Aggie he found his ticket out of town. He sh
owed Aggie the letter he found. But he wouldn't let her read it. He finished his drink and headed over to see McKee. He was sure McKee would see him. He burst into McKee's office. He was surprised to see me there. McKee told him he was busy. "I need to see you Mr. McKee, it's important," said Finny. McKee told him to take it up with Ross. By then Ross had a hold of Finny taking him out of McKee's office. "No, your makin' a mistake.....no, let me go.....you'll be sorry McKee." McKee thought it was just another scheme to get into his whiskey barrels.
He told me about the gun shipment. It was just like the Marshal said. McKee said it took him a while to figure it out, but it was paying off now. He was proud of his plan and it showed. He told me that tonight the supply train comes to a place called Cheyenne trail. There would be two drivers and six armed guards. He didn't want any of them to come out of the dry wash alive. The Cheyenne
wouldn't let anyone come out alive, so he couldn't either. That was who would get blamed for this. He asked me if I thought I could take three of the armed guards. "What do you think McKee?" We shook hands. "Be at the saloon tonight at eight o'clock, Ross will pick you up," said McKee. "I'll be there!"
Finny was upset. Nobody would listen to him. When he left McKee's he headed for the saloon. So he sat there and drank. Aggie saw that Finny was out of whiskey. She went over to him and asked him about that ticket out of here. He told her he knew something and it was worth a lot to the right people, but they didn't care to listen to him. He asked her to buy him a little drink. She agreed if he'd tell her what he knew. He shook his head 'no.' She then offered him a bottle. He agreed.
I went back to the hotel to clean up before I had to leave tonight. I didn't hear anyone come in, but I heard the door
slam. It was Aggie. I didn't like her barging into my room and told her to leave. She knew who I was. "Mr. McCain, is that how you talk to the ladies.....uhhhhh in North Fork?" She told me she hadn't told McKee, not yet. She knew everything. Where I was from, who I was working for, and she knew Micah's name. "Alright Aggie, it's your move, what do you want?" "Easy tall man." "When you leave.....I wanna go with you." "Oh I'll be good to you Lucas." "Honest I will." "Oh.....you and me," I said. "You and me," she said. We kissed. "That's how it will be," she said. "You'll take me?" I surprised her by putting my hand over her mouth. "Alright Aggie.....I'm gonna have to play this hand my way."
