Walter F. O'Malley, President of the Los Angeles Dodgers
Walter Francis O'Malley (October 9, 1903 – August 9, 1979) was an American lawyer who was the principal owner of the National League Brooklyn Dodgers professional baseball team (from 1958 the Los Angeles Dodgers). As owner of the Dodgers, he played a role in two of the key events in the history of both the club and the major leagues: Jackie Robinson's breaking of the color barrier in 1947 and the expansion of the major leagues to the West Coast, moving the Dodgers from Brooklyn to Los Angeles and coordinating the move of the New York Giants to San Francisco at a time when there were no teams west of Missouri. For this, he was long vilified by Brooklyn Dodger fans.
Walter O’Malley appears on the show as a favor to a former employee, Kevin Connors, a ballplayer, who then went into acting. O’Malley appeared as Dr. Woods as he bandages up the wrist of Connors.
The “Dr. Woods” character is an inside joke as the Dodger team doctor at that time is Dr. Robert Woods.
Ex-Dodger first baseman Chuck Connors star of the weekly series, who is pictures here with O'Malley, still believed in touching all bases. Connors decided that since his ex-boss allowed him to perform on the diamond, that it was only fair play the he returned the favor and let O'Malley ham it up for the camera.
