He had a recurring role in Barney Miller, and appeared in the soap opera General Hospital.

One of his most notable roles came in 1971, when he played Sam Beauregard, the father of Golden Ticket winner Violet Beauregarde, in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

In 1973 he appeared with Chuck Connors in Soylent Green.

Leonard was nominated for a 1959 Tony Award as Best Supporting Actor (Musical) for Redhead.
