The Writer's Corner
Written by Vanessa Rose aka
This episode is
the alternate ending of season two's "Smokescreen".
"FIRE! There's fire in the livery!" Mark yelled. He still felt awful
from smoking that cigar with Howie but he had to save Nils' livery.
"Whoa! Get water!" Then Mark realized that there was a horse in the
livery--Razor! "Oh no! I've gotta get Razor." Howie grabbed his arm.
"What are you doing, Mark?" He yelled over the roar of fire.
"I've gotta save Pa's horse!"
"It’s too dangerous!" Howie insisted but Mark yanked free and ran
inside. Howie gasped and ran to Lucas who stood pumping water behind
the hotel. The townsmen were passing buckets to each other.
"Mr. McCain! He's in the livery!" Lucas stopped and looked Howie.
"What do you mean?"
"Mark's in the livery!"
"He wanted to save your horse!" Lucas gasped and looked at Micah who
had replaced his spot at the pumping well. Micah nodded at him.
"I've gotta save him, Micah! Get the doc! He might be hurt!"
Meanwhile, Mark had forced Razor out of the livery.
"I have to get out of here..." Mark muttered running towards the
exit but a blast of heat and fire threw him across the stables
hitting a wooden post. Darkness clouded his vision.
"Mark! Marrkkk! Markkkkkkk!!" Lucas yelled. The fire had been put
out. Then he saw a small form. "Mark!" Ashes were in his hair and
clothes. Lucas cradled him. "Please don't die son. Please." Doc
Burrage came running.
"We need to get him to the office. But is he..." Doc let the
question hang in the air.
"Yes, he's breathing but barely."
"Mark will be just fine, Lucas." Doc said as he walked out of the
"He will? No burn marks?"
"Yes, I gave him a sedative because he kept saying that he started
the fire in the livery."
"What? No, that's impossible."
"I know, so I told him to rest. He needs to have good fresh air; he
breathed in a lot of smoke today."
"When can he come home?" Lucas asked hopefully.
"Pa?" A small raspy voice said. Lucas was reading his Bible. Mark
stood there looking awfully tired and weak.
"Son, go back to bed."
"But I've gotta tell you something." Mark said.
"Don't hurt your voice." Lucas warned. Mark got out his pencil and
paper and wrote,
'I started the fire'
"What on earth are you talking about, Mark?"
'Me and Howie were smoking'. Lucas blinked in confusion.
"So that's why you still feel sick son?"
Mark nodded. "Come here Mark." Lucas' son walked over to him. Lucas
hugged him. "I love you son. You know that right?"
"Yes." Mark rasped.
"Why don't you go onto bed?"
"Aren't you going to punish me?"
"I think you already had enough punishment."
"Yes, now go back to bed before I change my mind." Mark smiled and
started to go back inside the bedroom before turning around.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
