Mark and Freddie's Adventure part 2
Written by Vanessa Rose aka lilyrose

*This story is dedicated to all the Writers in the McCain Ranch.

Things weren't going very well for Kylie. She had been running away from the Royal Springs Deputy Marshall, Andrew Roals. Ever since her Pa and Ma had...been murdered two months ago, she was living on the ranch all by herself, she had sold all the cattle, let go all of the ranch hands....

"Come on, Kylie, don't keep running!" Andrew said breathless sitting on his horse. He wiped his forehead with his handkerchief. She twisted her upper torso to look at him.

"I'm not living with my aunt and uncle, Andrew." Kylie said firmly. "My ranch has been with my family for generations." Andrew had been her best friend in school, but he was three years older than her and was now the deputy of the town.

"Aw, its not my fault that you're a minor and you'll have to live with them but---" Andrew stopped talking to watch a boy riding on a horse running away from Indians. 'Mark?' Kylie thought. She yanked the reigns and pushed her horse to go faster after them.

"Go get the Marshall!" Kylie shouted to Andrew who turned his horse around back to town.

"I said, I'll kill him." Kylie repeated. 'Where is Andrew?' She grunted holding her rifle at the Indian cheif.

"Kylie! Look out!" Mark yelled when someone ripped her rifle out of her hands stinging them.

"Andrew!" Kylie hissed. "Why are you so slow?"

"Slow? I'm not slow. You're the one who's slow." Andrew shot back. He stiffened and stared at the Indian. Give me the kid, now." The other Indian let Mark's arm go. "Hop on, kid." Kylie noticed that Mark was irritated with being called 'kid'. Mark mounted on the horse anyway.

As soon as they reached the town, they headed to the Royal Springs Marshall's Office.

"Mark, meet Andrew Roals. He's a friend of mine." Kylie introduced before they stepped inside the office. Mark stuck out his hand and Andrew stared hard at him then shook his hand.

"How do you know Mark, Kylie?" Andrew asked looking at her.

"I was thirteen and I was kidnapped by some outlaws that were against my parents.... Mark tried to save me but he was kidnapped as well." Kylie said looking at Mark. "Hey, is your face all right?" Mark was staring at his boots.

"Oh, yeah. Sure." Mark replied.

"So you're saying that you and your friend were in your camp and you were kidnapped by some Apache indians that kidnapped you before?" Marshall Dylan asked Mark as he wrote down notes. Mark nodded. Dylan then looked at Kylie.

"Kylie, you know that you're still going with them, right?" Dylan asked. Kylie stiffened while she stood beside Mark who was sitting down.

"You can't stop me, Marshall. I told you. I'm not going with them. The ranch is mine--"

"Young lady, I'm only doing what the law says. Minors need to have protection." Mark saw tears well in Kylie's eyes.

"Yeah? Why weren't the murderers stopped from killing my parents?" Kylie blurted. "My aunt and uncle have never cared about me or my parents. I don't need them." Dylan's face hardened.

"Kylie! You have to go with them." Dylan said. Mark swallowed. Her parents were dead?

"Excuse me, Marshall. I'm looking for my son---" A person said as he stepped in. Mark shot up from his chair and turned to see his Pa standing there in the doorway.

"Pa!" Mark cried and ran into his arms. He buried his head into his Pa's chest.

Something broke inside of her. She wouldn't dare. Would she? She squeezed her eyes shut as she felt the room close in on her. She breathed heavily. She needed to get out of there. She ran outside of the office, tears streaming down her cheeks. Kylie kept running--running to the hotel where she was staying for the moment.

"Was that Kylie?" Lucas McCain asked. Mark nodded.

"Yeah, she and Deputy Roals saved me, Pa." Lucas raised his eyebrow.

"Well, thank you, Deputy." He said.

"Anyone would have done it, sir." Deputy Roals replied.

Lucas turned to Mark. "Why don't we go home? Freddie's with me, so is Micah."

"Wait, I want to see Kylie first." Mark said. Lucas nodded. Mark ran into the hotel not noticing Micah or Freddie's hellos.

Kylie looked at the framed picture that she held in her hands. It was a recent photo of her and parents. They had taken it right before.... She was standing beside her horse with her parents each standing beside her. She swallowed hard and sighed. She heard someone knock on the door.

"Come in." She said in a monotone voice hoping it wasn't one of the town women.

"Kylie?" Mark said quietly. She turned on her bed.

"Oh, hi Mark. What do you need?"

"I just wanted to say thank you for what you did for me and... I'm really sorry about your parents.".

"Thanks Mark."

"Will you be all right?" Mark asked.

"Of course. Why wouldn't I be?"

"I know how hard it is to lose a parent, Kylie." Kylie looked at Mark who sat beside her.

"I remember, Mark. But itís so hard." Kylie said.

"Why don't you tell me what's bothering you? Maybe it will help you feel better?" Mark suggested. She shrugged and began her story.

"It happened two months ago. I had taken a ride. It seems like every time I take a ride something goes wrong. I came home for lunch and I saw the ranch hands burying two bodies. I saw two crosses with names on it. The ranch has been my familyís for generations... They put them in the cemetery. I asked, no, I begged to know who they were. Then I saw their names. My parents'. I felt like my life shattered into pieces. I wanted to know what happened." Mark put a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

"Itís okay, keep on going... Talking will make it feel better." Mark noticed that Pa was standing in the doorway watching. Kylie breathed in deeply trying to pull her thoughts together.

"They were shot and one of the ranch hands saw it... He was hurt too but he made it. They were MURDERED, Mark!" Kylie sobbed. "It was a deliberate plan to kill my parents and now, the Marshall wants me to go to my aunt and uncle's... But I can't! I have to save my ranch!" Mark looked at his Pa for help. Pa stepped inside and bent down on his heels to look at Kylie.

"I'm really sorry about your parents, Kylie. But you have to do what the townsfolk think what's best for you." Pa said quietly. Mark bit his lip wondering what Kylie's reaction would be. She wiped her tears from her face.

"All right, I guess. Even though I don't want to, I will go."

Mark, Freddie, Micah and Lucas watched Kylie get into the stagecoach.

"Well, I guess we'll never have that adventure, Freddie." Mark said as they watched her go.

"Adventure? We already had an adventure, Mark." Freddie answered.

"Not together we didn't. Hmm.. What should we do... Maybe go to Old Mexico?" Mark teased. Freddie playfully punched him in the arm.

"Nah, I think one adventure is enough."

"We were supposed to have an adventure together, Freddie." Mark insisted. Micah and Lucas rolled their eyes. Three strangers on horses rode in to the town looking like gangsters.

"Oh look over there! Maybe that's our new adventure!" Mark pointed. Everyone groaned including Lucas.
